Position Focus:
Strategic Analysis is Yale s internal consulting team. We work on the most complex challenges facing Yale, and help enable University leaders to make decisions that best advance Yale s mission. Our work spans the campus, from Science Hill to the Medical School, from the College and Graduate school to the Professional Schools. We address a broad spectrum of topics including: defining and measuring excellence, setting priorities, improving performance and allocating scarce resources across the units that comprise Yale. The decisions we support will have a decisive impact on the future of Yale. We measure our results in the actions taken by University leaders, and collaborate closely with them as partners in this endeavor. The group reports jointly to the Provost and SVP for Operations, and benefits from the support and frequent engagement of the President and other University leaders. The position reports to the Associate Vice President for Strategy & Analytics.
The Strategic Analysis team is staffed by recent Yale graduates serving in the Swensen Fellows program, a gift-funded initiative that supports four full-time Fellows and two summer interns. The Fellowship was launched in 2016 and currently has three full-time Fellows, each serving a two-year commitment.
The Associate Director will play a crucial role in shaping the Swensen Fellows program and the Strategic Analysis function. That will include coaching the Fellows to develop their skills as advisors and leaders. As such, the incumbent must have a love for training and mentorship, and a desire to build a high-performing team. In addition, the Associate Director must have top-notch strategy skills, and the capacity to lead complex projects with a high degree of autonomy.
Essential Duties
1. Lead high-priority strategic projects. The Associate Director will independently lead important strategic projects, and will work with the AVP on the team s highest-profile projects. Project leadership entails these responsibilities:
* Crack the problem: identify issues, create hypotheses and execute analysis leading to a well-articulated solution
* Design and execute research and analysis: analyze all types of financial and operational data, mining existing databases and creating new data where none exists
* Collaborate with and manage clients: work closely with mid-to-senior level decision-makers across Yale to understand their objectives, formulate a workable approach, and iterate to create action plans that they endorse and will execute
* Organize the process: translate business objectives into timelines and coordinate various constituents to ensure work is delivered on time, adapting flexibly to changes along the way
* Communicate concepts and results: create clear, concise presentations to facilitate working sessions and final meetings; lead small group presentations; prepare your clients for large and high-stakes presentations, including meetings with the Yale Corporation
* Stay abreast of key issues and help set the agenda of projects for the group to pursue 2. Help in the recruitment and ongoing development of the Strategic Analysis team
* Lead the development and implementation of onboarding and training for Fellows, and refine over subsequent versions of the program
* Lead recruiting efforts, including outreach and screening
* Assist AVP with mentoring and team development, fostering a positive and engaged team culture and taking an active interest in the professional development of Fellows across their time in the group (beyond the individual project) 3. Build a community of practice at Yale and peer institutions
* Maintain ongoing relationships with clients to help foster follow-through
* Join select University committees to contribute expertise to critical issues
* Represent Yale with peer institutions to learn from others and to share our lessons
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor s Degree is required. Five years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Proven ability leading high-priority strategic projects and advising clients.

Proven ability to analyze data to frame and answer questions.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Excellent written and communication skills; ability to present and lead effective meetings.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others, with a strong preference to leading and/or designing training programs in an environment with the highest standards for quality work.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Committed to and passionate about Yale's mission and the advancement of higher education.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
MBA; experience working with a top-tier consulting firm.
